tightvncserver

You can connect to your Linux desktop by different means. Today I discovered you can use tightvnc server and client as follows, yielding your full Gnome Desktop in a window, with good bandwidth balance:

Launch tightvncserver on your Linux box

$ tightvncserver -geometry 1280x1024

And in your client (Win XP) in my case use the tightvnc viewer. Fill in your Linux address, for instance, linux.box.sk:1, where 1 is the display number you saw in your Linux server when launching the tightvncserver.

You will end connected to a flat screen with only a gnome-terminal on it. If you want your full desktop just launch in the terminal:

$ gnome-panel &
$ nautilus &

That's all, enjoy!
