It happened after upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 on my amd64 desktop, the log out process on gnome took some minutes.
I just found out in some forums this happens due to the file ~/.gnome2/session is missing, so it is solved just going to System/Preferences/Session/ -> Options tab and "Save current session".
